Most wrestling fans are not there for the wrestling. They are there for the soap opera. Big stars involved in compelling stories. Charisma and star power are way more important than in ring product.
It doesn’t matter how fast and technical the wrestling gets in AEW, they will always have about 800k fans who love that shit. While the majority, who want the stars and coherent stories, will stay away.
Hogan knew how to work a crowd, no one wanted to see him put Earthquake in an arm drag toe hold. There is no money in the US in that kind of wrestling.
Even someone like Kurt Angle. He was so over and such a star because of his personality and character work. Being such a good wrestler was only a small part of his overall package.
Austin and Rock were as punch kicky as possible at their very peak, no one cared, and most don’t even remember the Benoit/Angle clinic on the same card at Mania 17. Big story and stars win out every single time.
