WWE's nostalgia market is undertapped. They do a lot with it, but still not nearly what they could.
I think they underestimate the novelty/interest that people have in "old school" WWF. Particularly the people who don't have interest (or won't admit to having interest) in the current product.
Retro is cool. Especially in wrestling.

I think perhaps WWE is a little weary about pushing the past too hard over the present, because of how they think it may stack up.
They do try to keep an eye on the current and future as to not put themselves up shit creek without future generations.
