AEW was very lucky to get that new tv deal from TNT when it happened considering their original deal only paid them a percentage of ad money.

AEW didn't get a big money deal though. They basically got an extension in duration. If you believe Meltzer on the production costs being only $500k per episode, and not a roundabout number or something off-the-cuff from The Young Bucks, then they got a slight increase in money. But an interview with a WWE production team member in 2016 suggested that the average Raw cost $880k to put on. I don't know what would make current AEW so much cheaper than four years ago WWE, so if you take that number and account for 50 shows, then that's $44 million per deal -- which is virtually their current one.

I think Dave Meltzer got played by a fake press release making it sound like the new deal was a major upgrade instead of a simple tentative extension. When WWE re-announced the Saudi deal, Meltzer was all over that as PR fluff. AEW does a similar thing? Nope.

Even if their deal was an actual increase of $20 million per year, that's still not even big in TV terms. But I seriously doubt that their production costs are that low, and rather Meltzer is just accepting a spoonful of sugar.

He's worked after retirement. Physical involvement in angles, etc. The bell just didn't ring and he just wasn't in wrestling gear. Well, except for WrestleMania 32. That night he was in wrestling gear.

WWE has higher overhead costs because of their larger production staff and other associated stuff bloating the cost for episodes.

The amount of money going into AEW's bank after you subtract costs isn't that huge even compared to WWE's old deal but it pretty much means Khan's original plan of becoming profitable in year 4 or 5 would now be possible in year 1.

Vince had the same mentality with the XFL's revival when it came to them accepting a similar ad sharing deal. No expectations of being profitable until maybe the end of the 1st deal and putting all the hope on the next deal ensuring profitability and big spike in revenues.

Do we know for sure that it is profitable, or is that just a Meltzer myth?

Tony Khan mentioned stuff like that in past interviews, especially after they got a newly revised tv deal from TNT.
